Revisiting The Visualz EP

Dropped Gravity recently in a set. This whole release is just ill rhymes and beats throughout.

A magnum opus of a track, in all its eleven minute glory.

Related: Just stumbled upon a cool post from a few years ago on renowned New York based street culture aficionado Bobbito Garcia and his defunct Fondle 'Em records over at Missing Toof.

Thanks tp Spine magazine for the heads up on this report on Bobbito on CNN, where he speaks about the influence, effect of black culture in his household growing up and anon as a Latino in NY.

Stays Grinding

Got a couple of tracks from an MC out of Seattle, Washington named Taybot.

They're off his Taybot /Phil & Numberman mix-tape.

He's hungry, focussed, definitely has potential, three good reasons to post these tunes. Will be keeping my ear out for any future releases of his.

DJ U-Tern's Hip House 08 experiment

Listen here

This is a truly innovative, very fresh concept, executed flawlessly by Vancity's U-Tern

Here's what DJ U-Tern had to say about this latest edition of One Day Later radio.

Any one remember that short-lived genre in the late 80's called "Hip-House"? If you were around for that era you were either the hardcore hip-hopper that kind of hated what it represented, or you were in the club losing your shit to "I'll House You" by the Jungle Brothers. I wanted to see what it might sound like in the present day, an experiment if you will. So I took a gang of current house tunes, some classics and a bunch of acapellas and made it happen.

Classic rap mix

(Pic from The Angry Citizen)

These mixes are the result of being inspired by the recent Hip Hop sets posted by DJ Mike B of LAX's Banana Split night on his blog and a DJ J-Smoke mixtape, not to mention all the classic tracks themselves. Anyhow, here's this mix from this weeks Mothership Reconnection podcast I co-host with DJ Myme 01. Look out for the Ultramags "Feelin It" section were there's a blackout (literally), haha. One other notable thing about this mix, the first ten or so minutes were done while the two dogs in the place (ones that bark, not those referred to in rap), were running back and forth in between the 1 and 2's and the vinyl used in this mix. You have to laugh, I did.

There's also a similar hour long mix of the same, I've done for a Latvian mix site, I'll throw that up here when, if they up it?

ERule - Please Listen To My Demo

Sydney's DJ Ology threw this video up on the Stealth magazine board, probably about the same time Robbie posted it over at Unkut. So, it's only right you go check out his post on this ill new track/video from the Los Angeles based MC.

ERule's 1994 "Listen Up" / "Synopsis" 12's is one of the greatest rap double sided singles of all time, to me. I really got to go and give that "Cold Currentz" release a listen.

Ise Lyfe set to perform Who's Krazy in LA

Respected, revered spoken word hip-hop theatre artist Ise Lyfe, will be showcasing his one man show - "Who's Krazy" at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood this week.

Directed bv Billy Hutton, "Who's Krazy" centres around the everyday life of a 31-year old African-American working in the Corporate rat maze, who reject, attempt to downplay early thirty year old mans blackness, till the character's ,moment of ephiphany, when he is forced to take a long look at all that he is, his beliefs, his background, himself.

In a HipHopDX interview, Ise Lyfe stated in relation to his one man theatre show - "This story is about a man who is born in the hood, goes corporate, and then fizzles out on his own hype. The hood in the 80's, his corporate career in the 90's, and when the piece ends with him on the ground moving his legs but going nowhere, he personifies and embodies the current state of this vast Hip Hop culture spawned from love, hunger, hopes, and bad decisions".

Acitivist, artist, educator Ise Lyfe made his own path to success. Tired, burnt out, stressed out due to the violence ever present throughout his native Oakland, California, Ise found an escape, lessons, truths, motivation scribling down rhymes, penning journals and through his involvement in teen poetry slams. He first obtained national recognition in 2000, as a competitor in the annual Youth Speaks Poetry Slam Finals and through representing SF's Bay Area at the Youth Speaks Natioanl Poetry Slam in 2001.

These awards, accolades helped secure performances for Ise all over the States. He has performed alongside Dave Chappelle, E-40, Harry Belafonte, Dead Prez, Ben Harper, The Coup to name a few and has been featured on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on HBO.

Ise co-founded the P.O.W.E.R. Movement, a grass roots organisation dealing with the educational, social and political basic needs of struggling youth. He also formed Lyfe Productives and has stood at the front of numerous Oakland school classrooms, repping Youth Speaks.

If you're in Hollywood on Friday 11th, 12th, 13th of this month, here are the "Who's Krazy" show details:

Greg Street feat. Nappy Roots - Good Day (Audio)

Mad late on throwing this joint up for the readers of Weight Of A Nickel to check. Yeah, yeah the New Music Cartel would of thrown this up days ago, I know.

So back to this great newish tune from ATL radio personality / DJ - Greg Street, which is the lead single off his forthcoming compilation for Interscope records, entitled "Certified Worldwide", featuring Lil Wayne, The Game, Wale, amongst others.

Slightly reminiscent of Nas's classic "I Can" (in terms of the positive message promoted throughout "Good Day"), this is a little feel good music for those who are grumpy, depressed, broke, stressed out, overwhelmed, heartbroken.

If you're in the South or the Midwest make sure you get along to one of the planned cookouts, album launches. I'll pass you over to Greg himself to fill you in on these forthcoming events.

“I want to plan a giant cookout for the listeners of radio stations in different cities and invite their families out. I want mothers, grandmothers and kids to come out and have a good time,” he says. “The food and the beverages will be free. Then at night we’ll do a party so we’ll touch on both levels of what’s going on: the family thing and the party thing.”

Word.

East Flatbush Project - A Day In A Life (Audio)

BK's the East Flatbush Project are best known for the real rap classic "Tried By 12". The EFB concept is the brainchild of producer Spencer For Hire. A Day In A Life is the third, in a series of singles and this dose of firewater over a menacing, bleak, powerful soundscape features New Jersey's Stress (pictured above).

Professor D (Dope Poet Society) - Freedom In Haiti (Audio)

Pic: M-1 (Dead Prez) with Professor D. Forwarded, by Lee @ Foundation Media.

TDot's (Canadian) wordsmith Professor D of the Dope Poet Society sheds light on the hardships, struggles that the residents of Haiti go through. Trials that are made no easier by US governments interventions and foreign policy. Freedom In Haiti is an eye opening jewel from an MC whose material I'll be looking out for in the future. Turn off your radio and go back to searching for the realness - honest music where songwriters speak on something other than soppy formulaic rehashed broken heart tales, pre orchestrated macho garbage and material wealth, the time is now.
